Yukimura-ryū is the style of kinbaku that Yukimura Haruki developed over many years of teaching. Its teachers describe it as tender, affectionate rope, set deliberately apart from the harsh and strenuous positions of semenawa.
At its center is aibu no nawa, “caressing rope”: the rigger controls the tension of the rope in order to transmit emotion to the partner. Teachers of the style name three essential elements — control of rope tension, the choice of ties, and appreciation of the partner’s posed position.
Yukimura himself put feeling first: emotion, shame, and the wordless exchange between rigger, rope and partner. Practitioners from Japan and abroad treated his Shibuya studio as a point of reference, and he allowed only a few students to teach in his name or to carry a bakushi title.
