About Kinbaku World

An independent encyclopedia of kinbaku and shibari — Japanese rope bondage — and the people, styles, places and works that shaped it.

What you will find

History essays, biographies of rope artists and historical figures, the styles and lineages of Japanese rope, a glossary of Japanese terms, encyclopedic descriptions of ties, and a library of books, magazines and films.

What you will not find

No nudity, no explicit imagery and no step-by-step instructions. Rope is learned in person from an experienced teacher; this site explains, it does not teach.

How we work

Every entry cites its sources and shows when it was last reviewed. Read our editorial policy for how entries are researched, who gets a page, and how to correct or remove one.
